Top bar hives adopt a more natural approach to beekeeping. Instead of using frames and wax, bees in a top bar hive build their own comb. This is done by building comb downwards from the grooves on the top bars - hence the name top bar hive. The honey harvest one gets from a top bar hive is generally less than one gets from a national hive.
